Othering in the workplace - where employees seen as ‘different’ are pushed to one side despite relevant skills and knowledge - carries a high cost for both the individuals involved and the organisations that hire them.

Drawing on the insights of a diverse range of contributors, this book unpicks the subtle interactions that can marginalise individuals in professional settings, sometimes unconsciously. Left unchecked, such othering practices undermine the psychological safety of all employees, block the creative potential of work teams and lead to high levels of staff turnover and disengagement.

With its focus on staff retention and team building, this book presents a nuanced understanding of how othering occurs and offers practical tools for addressing it as it arises.
